Intervention to achieve alcohol abstinence represents the most effective treatment for alcohol-dependent patients with liver cirrhosis; however, anticraving drugs might worsen liver disease. We aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of baclofen in achieving and maintaining alcohol abstinence in patients with liver cirrhosis.

The inhibition of cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is considered a potential new mechanism for treatment of dyslipidaemia. Anacetrapib (MK-0859) is a CETP inhibitor currently under development. We aimed to assess anacetrapib's effects as monotherapy on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and on 24-h ambulatory blood pressure.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the leading cause of viral encephalitis in southeast Asia. Although no treatment is currently available, vaccination effectively prevents the disease. In a non-inferiority study, we aimed to compare the safety and immunogenicity of a novel, second-generation, inactivated candidate vaccine for JEV with a licensed, mouse-brain-derived vaccine.

Intrapartum and neonatal single-dose nevirapine are essential components of perinatal HIV prevention in resource-constrained settings, but can induce resistance to other non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor drugs. Increases in T helper (Th) 2 cytokine concentrations have been seen in atopic asthma, with interleukin 4 and interleukin 13 thought to have a role in the physiological response to allergen challenge. Our aim was to assess the therapeutic effect of pitrakinra, an interleukin-4 variant that targets allergic Th2 inflammation by potently inhibiting the binding of interleukin 4 and interleukin 13 to interleukin-4Ralpha receptor complexes.
