9861. Angiographic findings in patients with refractory unstable angina according to troponin T status.
The CAPTURE (C7E3 fab AntiPlatelet Therapy in Unstable REfactory angina) trial enrolled patients with refractory unstable angina and documented a therapeutic benefit for abciximab, a platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor antagonist, that was particularly evident in patients with elevated troponin T (TnT) levels. In the current study, we related the angiographic data to the TnT status of the CAPTURE patients.

Remodeling of the extracellular matrix plays an important role during the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and restenosis. The matrix glycoprotein thrombospondin-1 (TSP1) inhibits endothelial cell proliferation and migration in vitro. In contrast, TSP1 facilitates the growth and migration of cultured vascular smooth muscle cells. Accordingly, we investigated the hypothesis that administration of anti-TSP1 antibody could facilitate reendothelialization and inhibit neointimal thickening in balloon-injured rat carotid artery.

Intracoronary brachytherapy appears to be a promising technology to prevent restenosis. Presently, limited data are available regarding the late safety of this therapeutic modality. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence of late (>1 month) thrombosis after PTCA and radiotherapy.
9867. Additive effects of late preconditioning produced by monophosphoryl lipid A and the early preconditioning mediated by adenosine receptors and KATP channel.
The cardioprotective effect of preconditioning can be exerted within 1 to 2 hours after initial ischemia, termed classical or early preconditioning, or can reappear 24 hours later as second window or late preconditioning. The objective of this study was to study the interaction between late and early preconditioning and to determine the potential underlying mechanism.
9868. PPARalpha activators inhibit cytokine-induced vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 expression in human endothelial cells.
Adhesion molecule expression on the endothelial cell (EC) surface is critical for leukocyte recruitment to atherosclerotic lesions. Better understanding of transcriptional regulation of adhesion molecules in ECs may provide important insight into plaque formation. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-alpha (PPARalpha), a member of the nuclear receptor family, regulates gene expression in response to certain fatty acids and fibric acid derivatives. The present study investigated PPARalpha expression in human ECs and their regulation of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1).

A recent study of human cadaveric renal arteries revealed that renal artery narrowing could be due not only to atherosclerotic plaque compensated for by adaptive remodeling, but also to hitherto undescribed focal narrowing of an otherwise normal renal arterial wall (ie, coarctation). The present study investigated whether vessel coarctation could be identified in patients with symptomatic renal artery stenosis (RAS).
9870. QT dispersion as an attribute of T-loop morphology.
The suggestion that increased QT dispersion (QTD) is due to increased differences in local action potential durations within the myocardium is wanting. An alternative explanation was sought by relating QTD to vectorcardiographic T-loop morphology.

The systemic hypotension during human sepsis has been ascribed to increased production of nitric oxide (NO). Therefore, inhibitors of NO synthesis have been used in the treatment of hypotension in patients with septic shock. In addition, NO production may inhibit the synthesis and vasoconstrictor effects of endothelin-1 (ET-1). In this study, we tested whether ET-1 contributed to the vasopressor action of the NO synthase inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) in patients with severe septic shock.

Dual therapy with ticlopidine and aspirin has been shown to be as effective as or more effective than conventional anticoagulation in patients with an optimal result after implantation of intracoronary metallic stents. However, the safety and efficacy of antiplatelet therapy alone in an unselected population has not been evaluated.

The association between oxidative modifications of LDL and coronary artery disease (CAD) is suspected but not established. Therefore, the association between plasma levels of oxidized LDL and malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified LDL and acute coronary syndromes and stable CAD was investigated.
9876. Reduction of recurrent ischemia with abciximab during continuous ECG-ischemia monitoring in patients with unstable angina refractory to standard treatment (CAPTURE).
In the CAPTURE (c7E3 Fab Anti Platelet Therapy in Unstable REfractory angina) trial, 1265 patients with refractory unstable angina were treated with abciximab or placebo, in addition to standard treatment from 16 to 24 hours preceding coronary intervention through 1 hour after intervention. To investigate the incidence of recurrent ischemia and the ischemic burden, a subset of 332 patients (26%) underwent continuous vector-derived 12-lead ECG-ischemia monitoring.

Altered cardiovascular variability is a prognostic indicator for cardiovascular events. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. We tested the hypothesis that OSA is accompanied by alterations in cardiovascular variability, even in the absence of overt cardiovascular disease.

Rotational atherectomy with the Rotablator catheter has improved percutaneous treatment of certain coronary atherosclerotic lesions, but the "no-reflow" phenomenon remains a serious complication. Because platelet activation by rotablation may contribute to the no-reflow phenomenon, we developed an in vitro system to test the effect of rotablation on platelets in the absence or presence of platelet GP IIb/IIIa receptor blockade with abciximab.

The antimigraine drugs ergotamine and sumatriptan may cause angina-like symptoms, possibly resulting from coronary artery constriction. We compared the coronary vasoconstrictor potential of a number of current and prospective antimigraine drugs (ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methysergide and its metabolite methylergometrine, sumatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan, rizatriptan, avitriptan).

This study assessed the ability of a potent and selective ET(A) antagonist to reduce neointimal hyperplasia in a porcine coronary artery stented injury model.
