Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are trophic to small intestinal and colonic mucosa. This study determined whether SCFAs infused into the cecum out of continuity stimulated jejunal and colonic cellularity and whether these effects were mediated by the autonomic nervous system and/or enterotrophic hormones.

An apparently novel entity, diffuse hemorrhagic gastroenteropathy (DHG), in a 70-year-old female who had an unremitting course of chronic gastrointestinal blood loss for 3 years requiring transfusion of more than 200 units of packed red blood cells over this period is reported here. Endoscopy showed diffusely hemorrhagic mucosa in the stomach, duodenum, and small bowel. Full-thickness biopsy of the stomach and small intestine revealed luminal narrowing of capillaries and post-capillary venules within the lamina propria due to swelling and some proliferation of the endothelial cells with margination and emigration by neutrophils as well as partial occlusion of some vessels by fibrin thrombi. DHG may represent a new entity characterized by mucosal hemorrhage due to local mucosal ischemia of the gastrointestinal tract secondary to a small vessel "vasculopathy" apparently restricted to this site.

A strong association exists between ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Previously, the presence of a unique epitope shared by colon and biliary epithelial cells was shown by using the novel monoclonal antibody (MAb) 7E12H12 developed against a colonic epithelial protein. In the present study, the presence of circulating autoantibody in PSC against this peptide was examined.

Four patients with nasopharyngeal angiofibroma and familial adenomatous polyposis are reported here. Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma was 25 times more frequent in our patient population with familial adenomatous polyposis than in an age-matched hospital population. The association of these two rare conditions suggests that nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is an extracolonic manifestation of adenomatous polyposis. In addition, somatic mutation of the adenomatous polyposis coli gene, which causes adenomatous polyposis when mutated in the germline, could play a role in the pathogenesis of sporadic nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.
9132. Administration of N omega-nitro-L-arginine ameliorates portal-systemic shunting in portal-hypertensive rats.
Nitric oxide, a vasodilator synthesized from L-arginine by vascular endothelial cells, may play a role in the development of portal-systemic collaterals. This study investigated the effect of long-term inhibition of NO secretion on portal systemic shunting.
9135. Effects of intrasphincteric botulinum toxin on the lower esophageal sphincter in piglets.
The toxin of Clostridium botulinum (BoTx) inhibits the release of acetylcholine from nerve terminals and causes paralysis of skeletal muscle. The present study examined the hypothesis that BoTx may have a similar effect on gastrointestinal smooth muscle.

Specialized Barrett's esophageal mucosa, characterized by incomplete intestinal metaplasia of the esophageal mucosa, is associated with the development of adenocarcinoma. Although the intestinal disaccharidase sucrase-isomaltase (SI) has been shown in incomplete intestinal metaplasia of the stomach, it is commonly believed that Barrett's mucosa does not express SI based on the lack of enzymatic activity. This study was undertaken to determine whether the SI gene is expressed in Barrett's epithelium and its associated adenocarcinoma at the level of messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein.

The mechanism of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) absorption by the colon is not known. The aim of these experiments was to identify the transport mechanisms present in the basolateral membrane to develop an overall model of colonic SCFA absorption.

Newly synthesized apical membrane proteins in hepatocytes go first to the basolateral membrane, from which they are retrieved and delivered to the apical domain. The goal of the present study was to identify the vesicular carriers of these molecules.
