Probiotics are effective for treating acute infectious diarrhoea caused by bacteria, but there are inconsistent results for the effectiveness of probiotics for diarrhoea caused by viruses. In this article we want to determine whether Sb supplementation has an effect on acute inflammatory viral diarrhoea diagnosed with the multiplex panel PCR test. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Saccharomyces boulardii (Sb) as a treatment in patients diagnosed with viral acute diarrhoea.

Prior studies have suggested that proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use is associated with increased risk of dementia; however, these have been limited by incomplete assessment of medication use and failure to account for confounders. Furthermore, prior studies have relied on claims-based diagnoses for dementia, which can lead to misclassification. We investigated the associations of PPI and histamine-2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) use with dementia and cognitive decline.

66. A postsurgical prognostic nomogram for patients with lymph node positive rectosigmoid junction adenocarcinoma.
The definition of rectosigmoid junction (RSJ) is still in debate. The treatment and prognosis of patients with rectosigmoid junction cancer (RSJC) and positive lymph nodes (PLN-RSJCs) are mostly based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Our study aims to assist clinicians in creating a more intuitive and accurate nomogram model for PLN-RSJCs for the prediction of patient overall survival (OS) after surgery.

Peristomal wound infection is a common complication in patients receiving percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). The main reason for peristomal infection might be the oral microbes coating the gastrostomy tube during implantation. Povidone-iodine solution can be applied for skin and oral decontamination. We designed a randomized controlled trial to test the effectiveness of a Betadine® (povidone-iodine) coated gastrostomy tube to reduce peristomal infection after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.

Percutaneous liver biopsy is the gold standard technique for establishing the cause of cirrhosis and liver disease activity assessment. However, some cases of steatohepatitis or other chronic liver diseases show a high number of false negative results in samples obtained via the percutaneous route. This fact justifies performing a liver biopsy via the laparoscopic route. However, this is an expensive technique, with morbidities associated with pneumoperitoneum and anesthetic complications. The main objective of this study is to develop a video-assisted technique that uses only a minimally-invasive device for the liver biopsy and the optical trocar. Without additional trocars, this technique constitutes a less invasive procedure than the existing techniques in clinical practice.

Tumor necrosis factor inhibitors, including infliximab and adalimumab, are a mainstay of pediatric Crohn's disease therapy; however, nonresponse and loss of response are common. As combination therapy with methotrexate may improve response, we performed a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pragmatic trial to compare tumor necrosis factor inhibitors with oral methotrexate to tumor necrosis factor inhibitor monotherapy.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening guidelines include screening colonoscopy and sequential high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing (HSgFOBT), with expectation of similar effectiveness based on the assumption of similar high adherence. However, adherence to screening colonoscopy compared with sequential HSgFOBT has not been reported. In this randomized clinical trial, we assessed adherence and pathology findings for a single screening colonoscopy vs sequential and nonsequential HSgFOBTs.
