Bronchodilation following deep inspiration is usually impaired in patients with asthma. This might be due to changes in airway mechanics in the presence of inflammation or structural changes within the airways. Although inhaled corticosteroid treatment has been shown to improve airway responses to deep inspiration in patients with asthma, airway inflammation can persist despite inhaled corticosteroid treatment, and thus could still influence the airway mechanics during deep breaths. We hypothesized that oral steroid treatment further optimizes deep inspiration-induced bronchodilation in clinically stable asthmatic patients who are receiving therapy with inhaled corticosteroids.

Low body weight in COPD patients is associated with worsening dyspnea, reduced leg strength, and poor prognosis. Classical rehabilitation strategies are then limited by reduced exercise tolerance. Thus, we proposed to evaluate whether electrostimulation (ES) was a beneficial technique in the rehabilitation programs for severely deconditioned COPD patients after an acute exacerbation.

Docetaxel has shown activity in the second-line treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Phase II studies have suggested that weekly therapy with docetaxel probably has a better toxicity profile than the conventional schedule of once every 3 weeks. Our aim was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of different docetaxel schedules in NSCLC patients who did not respond to previous platinum-based chemotherapy.

Impaired exercise tolerance is frequently observed in patients with COPD. Respiratory muscle endurance training (RMET) by means of normocapnic hyperpnea can be used to improve respiratory muscle function and probably exercise capacity. RMET is not applied on a large scale because complicated equipment is needed to maintain carbon dioxide homeostasis during hyperpnea, which can also be done by enlarging the dead space of the ventilatory system by breathing through a tube. Therefore, tube breathing might be a new, inexpensive method for home-based RMET. The aim of this study was to assess whether home-based RMET by means of tube breathing improves endurance exercise performance in patients with COPD.

High-frequency chest wall oscillation (HFCWO) has been shown to be as effective as standard chest physiotherapy (SCPT) for removal of pulmonary secretions as well as increasing FEV(1) in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Patients using HFCWO often administer aerosolized medications simultaneously, reducing time required for daily care. While peripheral pulmonary distribution of tracer in normal subjects has been shown to be unaffected by HFCWO, this has not been studied in CF patients. We evaluated distribution of aerosolized (99m)Tc diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid (DTPA) administered simultaneously with HFCWO and compared this with DTPA aerosolized after SCPT.
