In forty-eight samples from ovarian cancer patients, in vitro colony assay was carried out. The success rate of growing tumor colonies was 63% and the plating efficiencies was 0.06%. The in vitro sensitivity to standard drugs for the treatment of ovarian cancer was seemed to be compatible to that in clinical use. The predictive accuracy for sensitivity of this assay was 20% and 73% for resistance. Ovarian cancer cells can be formed colonies well and this assay method can be used for evaluation of various anticancer drugs in vitro.

Accurate in vitro anticancer drug sensitivity is helpful for successful chemotherapy of cancer patients. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the tumor stem cell assay for the selection of effective drugs for individual patients with cancer and for the in vitro phase II screening of new anticancer drugs. Sixty-six specimens obtained from cancer patients were tested drug sensitivity by this assay. The results showed that this assay as an excellent technique for testing in vitro sensitivity of anticancer drugs against tumor cells from specimens removed from individual patients. The in vitro results correlated with in vivo response data in 93% of the instances observed in vitro-in vivo associations and a true negative rate was 100%.

137 unitary activities were recorded from cerebellar flocculus of two pig-tail monkeys; 40 being Purkinje neurons and 81 being mossy fiber activities. Discharge patterns of these unitary activities were modulated accompanying to saccade in the dark. 11 Purkinje neurons stopped the discharge and 3 neurons and 26 mossy fibers showed burst discharges. The monkey was trained to fixate a target; 19 mossy fibers responded to the whole background sinusoidal movement, and 18 mossy fibers responded to passive head rotation. 15 mossy fibers responded to smooth target pursuit movement. 2 Purkinje neurons responded to eye position, 4 neurons responded to eye movement velocity. Responses of 3 Purkinje neurons correspond to sum of the velocity of the eye and head movements. 10 neurons respond to both position and velocity of the eye movement; response phase of 9 out of the 10 neurons changed according to the phase of the sinusoidal pursuit eye movement. The experimental results suggest that the Purkinje neurons in cerebellar flocculus of the monkey send informations concerning eye position, eye movement velocity and head movement velocity to the brain stem, thus functioning as a part of the oculomotor control system.
2511. [Effect of peripheral blood lymphocytes on in vitro colony formation of human lung cancer cell line (PC-7)].
The influence of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) on colony formation of cultured tumor cells was examined in tumor colony-forming assay. PBL could suppress colony formation of PC-7 cells effectively in dose-dependent manner. Maximal suppression of colony formation of PC-7 cells was achieved at the PBL-to-tumor-cell ratio of 25 : 1-50 : 1.

A 24-year-old female complained of headache and vomiting. The brain-CT scan demonstrated a tumor shadow in the right cerebellar hemisphere. The tumor was partially resected, and irradiation therapy was started. She died of intraventricular hemorrhage about 6 months after the onset of symptoms. Autopsy revealed a recurrent tumor mass in the cerebellum extending to the brain stem. It showed systemic metastases to the leptomeninx, liver, bones and ovaries. Histological examination showed a tumor which was a primarily composed of typical medulloblastoma cells with occasional Homer-Wright type rosettes. It partly showed glioblastoma-like configuration. Some tumor cells were positive for GFAP by the PAP method, suggesting glial differentiation.
