The diagnosis of Lyme disease should be based on objective clinical signs and symptoms. In a clinical study, we have evaluated whether the recommended two-step approach for serodiagnosis of Lyme disease is useful in daily clinical practice and can influence clinical decision making.

8583. Joint immobilization reduces synovial fluid hyaluronan concentration and is accompanied by changes in the synovial intimal cell populations.
Synovial fluid (SF) of normal joints contains high hyaluronan (HA) concentrations. However, the mechanism by which these are controlled and how they are influenced by articulation and loading are not established. In this study, we have examined whether immobilization influences SF HA concentration and whether this is associated with alterations in the synovial lining.

An early diagnosis in patients presenting with arthritis is important to provide information about prognosis and to initiate treatment. The objective of this study was to determine which markers applied in immunohistological analysis of synovial tissue (ST) specimens could be used to differentiate rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from other forms of arthritis.
8590. The peripheral benzodiazepine receptor ligand PK 11195 inhibits arthritis in the MRL-lpr mouse model.
Mice of the MRL-lpr strain develop a severe autoimmune arthritic condition when primed with complete Freund's adjuvant. The pathology is similar to that seen in human rheumatoid arthritis. We investigated whether PK 11195, a powerful ligand for peripheral benzodiazepine receptors, would have preventative or therapeutic effects in this model.

A growing body of research indicates that the stress system, and its interactions with the immune system, play a pivotal role in the aetiology and progression of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The stress system has multiple levels and comprises physiological, psychological and environmental components. However, most investigations in RA that involve the stress system tend to focus on the interrelationships between neuroendocrine and immune function, and related disease activity, with little regard for the role of other aspects of stress system activation, including psychological variables. This is despite the fact that psychological stressors, and related psychological variables, are known to influence RA disease activity. This article aims to explore the multiple levels of stress system activation and how they may ultimately influence disease-related outcomes in RA. Some measurement issues of psychological stress will also be examined.
