Age at onset is useful in identifying chronic back patients at an increased risk of axial SpA (axSpA). However, the majority of data on which the criterion of age at onset <45 years is based originates from Europe. Therefore it is unknown if this criterion applies in other parts of the world. We aimed to assess the age at onset of axSpA and its relationship with HLA-B27 and gender across the world.

Up to 0.3% of Japanese have hypouricaemia. Most cases appear to result from a hereditary disease, renal hypouricaemia (RHUC), which causes exercise-induced acute kidney injury and urolithiasis. However, to what extent RHUC accounts for hypouricaemia is not known. We therefore investigated its frequency and evaluated its risks by genotyping a general Japanese population.

Clinical trials have shown that low-dose glucocorticoid therapy in patients with RA reduces bone loss in hands or hip, but the effect on osteoporotic fractures is not yet clear. Therefore, we investigated the use of low-dose oral glucocorticoids and risk of osteoporotic fractures among patients with RA.

SLE has been described as an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular (CV) disease. Recently, the QRESEARCH risk estimator version 3 (QRISK3) calculator has been launched for CV risk assessment in the general population. QRISK3 now includes the presence of SLE as one of its variables for calculating CV risk. Our objective was to compare the predictive capacity between QRISK3 and the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) for the presence of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis in patients with SLE.
